Subject: Treatment of Bladder Spasticity (Toxins2002) Date: 6/27/2002 E-MOVE reports from the International Conference 2002: Basic and Therapeutic Aspects of Botulinum and Tetanus Toxins. Poster (P) and page (R) numbers are from Naunyn Schmiederberg's Archives of Pharmacology 2002;365(supplement 2).Botulinum-A toxin detrusor injection as a novel approach in the treatment of bladder spasticity in children with neurogenic bladder H Schulte-Baukloh, T Michael, HH Knispel P122; R39 Bladder spasticity can be effectively treated with BTX-A, according to this study. Twenty children with detrusor hyperreflexia who were ineffectively treated with anticholinergic drugs, and who required daily intermittent catheterization, received 85-300 units BOTOX to 40-50 sites in the detrusor. Compared to baseline, measurements at 2-4 weeks and 3 months showed these highly significant improvements: --Maximum detrusor pressure: 60%; 50% --Reflex volume: 220%; 130% --Bladder capacity: 160%; 150% The authors suggest that injections of BTX-A may be an effective additive or alternative treatment to anticholinergic drugs in this condition. -- 2002 E-MOVE conference reports are made possible in part through unrestricted educational grants from Elan Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline, and Pharmacia Corporation.
